Periodontal Disease

Inefficient oral care leads to plaque and tartar accumulation in the mouth. And plaque accumulation leads to bacterial infestation. When the bacteria make way below the gumline, the gum, tooth roots and bone tissues become infected.   This gives rise to gum or periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases are characterized by the following symptoms:

  • Red, inflamed, and swollen gums.
  • Tender or sore gums.
  • Loose teeth due to gum recession.
  • Plaque and tartar accumulation both above and below the gumline.
  • Pain while chewing and biting.
  • Bleeding and receding gums.
  • Persistent bad breath and weird taste in the mouth.
  • Abscess pockets with pus leaking out from them.
  • Misalignment of teeth.
  • What are the different stages of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease has two stages:

1. Gingivitis

The first stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis.  This stage characterizes the onset of periodontal diseases when the plaque and tartar start to accumulate on the tooth surfaces and gums. To treat gingivitis, your dentist will use a tool to scrape away the plaque and tartar deposits from both above and below the gumline. This is a reversible stage and can be fixed with a professional dental cleaning and deep cleaning.

2.  Periodontitis

If gingivitis is ignored and left untreated, it advances into periodontitis. Periodontitis is a severe form of periodontal disease and is irreversible in nature. During this stage, the plaque leaks below the gumline and reaches the tooth roots.   Bacteria multiply and secrete toxins that inflame the gums and bone tissues. As a result, the gums start to recede and periodontal pockets are formed. One may also experience severe gum recession and tooth loss.

How is periodontal disease treated?

The first stage of periodontal disease, gingivitis, is treated with a professional dental cleaning. Plaque and tartar buildups are and scraped away and tooth surfaces are left smooth and clean. On the other hand, when plaque has reached below the gumline, scaling and root planing are performed. Deep cleaning is performed under a local anesthetic in order to avoid discomfort. Special tools are employed to smoothen the tooth roots so that they can reattach themselves to the gums.

A severe case of periodontitis may require surgical procedures like gum grafting and flap surgery. The gum is elevated and the pus-filled pockets are removed. Then, the tooth roots are smoothened and the gum is stitched back.
